Garajonay National Park covers more than a tenth of La Gomera. It was declared on 25 March 1981 and UNESCO recognised it as a World Heritage Site in 1986; the island has been a Biosphere Reserve since 2012. It covers 3,984 hectares in six municipalities (Agulo, Alajeró, Hermigua, San Sebastián de La Gomera, Valle Gran Rey and Vallehermoso) and its summit, Garajonay, reaches 1,487 metres.

The monteverde covers more than 85% of the park, with laurel forest and heath woodland, and there are some 120 endemic Canary flowering plants. It is a Special Protection Area for Birds, with about 1,000 species of invertebrates and 30 of vertebrates, among them the endemic laurel pigeons.

There are no settlements inside the park, which has numerous trails, the Laguna Grande recreation area and a visitor centre at Juego de Bolas (Agulo). A fire that started in August 2012 burned almost 750 hectares.
