In the west of El Hierro, El Sabinar is a forest of juniper trees twisted by the constant action of the wind, which have grown almost lying on the ground. It is found in La Dehesa, or Dehesa de Sabinosa, a plateau at the western end of the island and of the Canary archipelago, which preserves the densest and oldest juniper stand on El Hierro.
La Dehesa is communal pasture and uninhabited, except for the homes of the wardens. It starts at an altitude of 900 metres at Cres and ends at the sea, and holds the Island Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes, patron saint of the island, in the municipality of La Frontera.
The Atlantic on one side; on the other, a landscape that seems sculpted. A place to pause on the most remote island of the archipelago.
