The Royal Monastery of San Millán de Yuso, in San Millán de la Cogolla (La Rioja), stands on the left bank of the river Cárdenas, in the heart of the San Millán valley. It was founded in 1053 by García Sánchez III of Navarre and forms a pair with the older monastery of San Millán de Suso, 'the upper one'; 'yuso' meant 'lower' in Old Castilian.
It has been a Site of Cultural Interest since 3 June 1931 and, together with Suso, a World Heritage Site since 4 December 1997. Its art combines Romanesque origins and a 16th-century Herrerian reconstruction.
It holds Codex 60, with the Glosas Emilianenses, and since 2001 the San Millán Foundation has digitised more than 72,000 pages from 212 volumes. A quiet valley of meadows and hills, the cradle of written Castilian.
