Teide is the roof of Spain: at 3,715 metres, it is the highest peak in the country. Its national park, declared on 22 January 1954, is the largest and oldest in the Canary Islands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007; it covers 189.9 km² and spans 13 municipalities.

Beside Teide rises Pico Viejo (3,135 m), and the landscape combines two great depressions, lava flows and the Roques de García. Its flora includes 194 higher plants, 58 of them endemic to the Canaries, and its fauna includes the Tenerife lizard, the mouflon and the blue chaffinch.

The Guanches called it Echeyde. In 1798 the eruption of the Narices del Teide poured out 12 million cubic metres of lava over three months. At sunrise and sunset the volcano takes on colours that justify the trip.
