On La Palma, the Caldera de Taburiente National Park was declared on 6 October 1954, has been a World Biosphere Reserve since 2002 and covers 4,690 hectares. Like the rest of the archipelago it is volcanic in origin, about 2 million years old, but it stands out for its abundance of water, on the surface and underground.

The depression lies between 600 and 900 metres and its rim reaches 2,426 m at the Roque de los Muchachos; its only natural outlet is the Barranco de las Angustias. It has numerous springs and waterfalls, such as the Salto de la Desfondada, about 150 m high.

The Canary pine predominates, with laurel forest, Canary heather tree and Canary cedar above 1,700 m. Among the vertebrates, which are scarce and largely introduced, are the Barbary sheep, goats and rabbits; there are four species of bats.
