Monumento Natural Los Barruecos

Los Barruecos is a site declared a natural monument by the Junta de Extremadura in February 1996 (Decree 29/1996), a legal status that guarantees its protection. It covers 319 hectares in the municipality of Malpartida de Cáceres, about 14 km from Cáceres and some 3 km south of the town centre.

Large masses of granite, worn down over millions of years, have formed rounded boulders, such as the Seta or the Peñas del Tesoro, among the ponds created by damming streams near the river Salor.

It has one of the most important colonies of white stork nesting on rock in Europe, and in 1997 Malpartida de Cáceres was named a 'European village of storks'. Otters, ocellated lizards and Mediterranean pond turtles also live here. The Peñas del Tesoro hold a Neolithic site some 7,000 years old, and El Ratero, an 18th-century wool-industry complex declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1988, is part of its history.
