The Covadonga lakes are two, Enol and Ercina, both of glacial origin, in the Asturian part of the Picos de Europa National Park, in the western massif and the municipality of Cangas de Onís, at 1,134 metres of altitude. There is a third, the Bricial, which only holds water during the thaw.

Until 1979 iron, manganese and mercury mines were worked at Buferrera, near Lake Ercina. The first climb of the Vuelta a España here was on 2 May 1983, won by Marino Lejarreta, and in 1996 it was Miguel Induráin's last professional appearance.

You get there by a 14.5 km road from the Real Sitio de Covadonga: in high season private vehicles cannot use it for six months of the year, and in low season there are no restrictions. It is wise to check the restrictions before you go. Green meadows, grazing cows and surrounding mountains make up a high-mountain scene.
