The Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero Nature Reserve is the only protected natural area in Valladolid. It covers Castronuño, Pollos, Torrecilla de la Abadesa and Tordesillas, and is also known as the Gran Reserva. It was created on 11 April 2002 (Law 6/2002), covers 8,420 hectares and is also a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Site of Community Importance.
It is an area of moorland plateaus and sedimented floodplains, with white poplars, willows, black poplars, holm oak, stone pine and thyme. Purple heron, grey heron, osprey and otter live here.
The San José reservoir, built in the 1940s, gave rise to this wetland. Water, shores and birds on the banks of the Duero.
