Roque Nublo

Gran Canaria, Las Palmas · Canarias

A symbol of Gran Canaria, the Roque Nublo is a monolith rising in the municipality of Tejeda, inside the Nublo rural park and near the geographic centre of the island. It has been protected as a natural monument since 1994 (451.8 hectares) and reaches 1,813 metres above sea level, with about 80 metres of rock above its base.

It is the eroded remnant of a pyroclastic flow of blocks and welded ash, born from the explosive eruption of a stratovolcano that may have reached 3,000 m. In ancient times it was a place of aboriginal worship and, since 2019, it has been part of the Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria Cultural Landscape.

A path of about 40 minutes (2,500 m) leads to its base. Its silhouette, visible from much of the island, dominates a landscape of ravines and peaks.
