Timanfaya National Park, in the municipalities of Yaiza and Tinajo, on Lanzarote, was declared on 9 August 1974 and covers 5,107 hectares, with a maximum height of 540 m. It is one of the most visited places in the Canary Islands: in 2021 it received 803,625 visitors.
Its landscape is volcanic, with more than 25 volcanoes. The eruption began on 1 September 1730, buried nine villages and the lava covered a quarter of the island over six years; the last eruptions were in 1824, and there are still hot spots of 100-120 °C at the surface and 600 °C at a depth of 13 metres.
In 1994 two natural monuments were added, the Islote de Halcones and the Montañas del Fuego, whose red, black and ochre tones make up a unique scene. Local farmers grow crops on volcanic lapilli to capture moisture from the trade winds.
