Doñana comprises the National Park (created on 16 October 1969) and the Natural Park (created in 1989 and extended in 1997), between Huelva, Seville and Cádiz. Together they cover 122,487 hectares, 54,251 of them national park, and it has been a World Heritage Site since 17 December 1994.

Its ecosystems are dunes, stabilised sand areas (cotos) and freshwater and saltwater marshes. There are more than 900 plant species, with stone pine woods and cork oak groves.

360 bird species have been recorded, 127 of which breed regularly, as well as 37 mammals, 13 reptiles, 10 amphibians and 20 freshwater fish. The Iberian lynx is one of the most protected species and has a breeding centre at El Acebuche. Alfonso X created a royal hunting reserve here in 1255, and the Doñana Biological Station was founded in 1964.
