Gaztelugatxe is an islet in Bermeo (Bizkaia), joined to the coast by a two-arched bridge. On it stands a hermitage dedicated to St John, which dates from the 10th century, although some finds are from the 9th, built on the remains of a castle linked to the Kingdom of Navarre. It was donated in 1053 by Íñigo López and burned several times, the last on 10 November 1978; it was reopened on 25 June 1980.
The landscape is sandstone and reef limestone, with tunnels, arches and caves. There are wild olives, holm oaks, heather and kelp, and the European storm petrel, the yellow-legged gull and the European shag live here.
You reach it by a stone bridge and 241 steps from the mainland. It is listed as a Cultural Asset of Special Protection, in the Cultural Landscape category. It is wise to check the access conditions beforehand.
