Montserrat is a rock massif traditionally considered the most important mountain in Catalonia. It is 30 kilometres from the centre of Barcelona, between the comarcas of l'Anoia, the Baix Llobregat and the Bages. On it stands the Benedictine sanctuary and monastery of Montserrat, dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat. Its summit is Sant Jeroni, at 1,236 metres, and it has been a natural park since 1987.

It covers about 50 km² and is made of conglomerate, the 'Montserrat puddingstone', which Alpine orogeny uplifted and fractured. There is holm oak and laurustinus woodland, with oaks, sarsaparilla, box and buckthorn in the damp areas, and wild boar, Spanish ibex, Bonelli's eagles, eagle owls, salamanders and bats live here.

Legend places the discovery of the image of the Virgin in the year 880. You get there by the BP-1121 from Monistrol de Montserrat. Rock needles above a monastery, the most recognisable silhouette in Catalonia.
