Moncayo Natural Park lies on the slopes of Mount Moncayo, the highest peak of the Iberian System, on the border between Zaragoza and Soria. It covers part of the comarcas of Aranda, Campo de Borja, Tarazona and El Moncayo, has 11,144 hectares and spans nine municipalities: Añón, Calcena, Litago, Lituénigo, Purujosa, San Martín de la Virgen de Moncayo, Talamantes, Tarazona and Trasmoz. It was created on 27 October 1978 and is a Special Protection Area for Birds.
Its altitude runs from 600 m on the river Huecha to 2,315 m at the Cerro de San Miguel. There are slates, sandstones, quartzites and limestones, with Quaternary glacial shaping; holm oak woods up to 900 m and beech woods between 1,200 and 1,650 m, with one endemic plant, Saxifraga moncayensis.
Roe deer, wild boar, foxes, golden eagles and griffon vultures live here. It was declared a Natural Site of National Interest in 1927, and since 1948 a road has linked the Veruela monastery with the sanctuary. A solitary mountain above the Ebro valley, with forests and quiet trails.
