La Albufera, from the Arabic 'al-Buḥayra', meaning 'the lake', is a natural park in the province of Valencia, about 10 km south of the city. The Romans knew it as Nacarum Stagnum. It was declared on 8 July 1986 (Decree 89/1986), covers 21,120 hectares in 13 municipalities and is a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Special Area of Conservation.

The lake, 1 metre deep on average, is separated from the sea by the sandbar of the Dehesa del Saler and surrounded by rice fields; the marsh covers about 14,000 hectares. In Roman times its area was about 30,000 hectares, much larger than today.

It has belonged to the Valencia City Council since 1911 (with definitive purchase in 1927). The Spanish toothcarp (fartet) and the Valencia toothcarp (samaruc), both endangered, the red-crested pochard, up to 10,000 birds, and the northern shoveler, up to 20,000, live here. The V-15 crosses the park from north to south.
