The Hoces del Río Duratón Natural Park protects the canyon that the Duratón, a tributary of the Duero, has carved in limestone between Sepúlveda and Burgomillodo, in the northeast of Segovia. It has been a natural park since 1989 (Law 5/1989) and has 5,037 hectares, in Sepúlveda, Sebúlcor and Carrascal del Río.
The river runs 27 km enclosed between walls several tens of metres high, in limestone formed about 140 million years ago. 572 plant species and 195 bird species have been catalogued.
The griffon vulture has 575 pairs counted in 2003, one of the largest colonies in Europe. There has been human presence since the Neolithic, the priory of San Frutos dates from the 12th century and the Burgomillodo reservoir was completed in 1953.
