The Sil canyon is a gorge carved by the river Sil, in the Ribeira Sacra, near its confluence with the Miño. It is a natural border between Ourense and Lugo and includes the municipalities of Nogueira de Ramuín, Pantón, Parada de Sil and Sober, with an area of about 5,900 hectares. It is 35 km long and has drops of more than 500 metres.
It is a Site of Community Importance in the Natura 2000 network, created in 2006. Its origin is tectonic, with Quaternary fractures, and the drop runs from 109 m at Peares to 1,014 m at the Pena do Alfaiate. Strawberry trees, heather, chestnuts and birches grow here, and trout, cormorants, short-toed eagles and genets live here.
It was a medieval river route between monasteries. Today you can travel it by catamaran or on foot, with a 22 km trail between San Esteban and Santa Cristina. Terraced vineyards above the canyon and Romanesque monasteries among the gorges.
