Sierra Espuña is a massif in the Region of Murcia, in the Betic Cordillera. Its regional park protects 17,804 hectares of Alhama de Murcia, Totana and Mula, although the mountain range exceeds 25,000. Its highest altitude is the Morrón de Totana, at 1,585 metres. It was a Natural Site of National Interest in 1931, a natural park in 1978 and a regional park in 1992.
About 1,000 plant species have been catalogued, with Aleppo pine predominating, and there are 8 amphibians, 17 reptiles, 123 birds and 38 mammals. In Pliego there are karst chasms, such as the Sima de la Higuera, with 5,500 metres of passages.
The snow wells were used from the late 16th century and stored up to 25,000 tonnes of ice. In the late 19th century it was almost treeless; the reforestation promoted by the engineer Ricardo Codorníu turned it into the greenest range in the region.
