Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park was created on 21 October 1955, in the province of Lleida, and is Catalonia's only national park. Its inner zone covers 14,119 hectares and the whole protected area, including the peripheral zone, reaches 40,852; it spans the comarcas of Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Sobirà, Pallars Jussà and the Aran Valley.
The landscape brings together up to 80 high-mountain lakes beneath granite peaks, with Comaloforno (3,033 m) as the highest summit. There are deciduous forests up to about 1,500 m, mountain pine woods above them, fir forests such as La Mata de València, the most important in the Pyrenees, and alpine pastures from 2,300 m; about 8% of the species are Pyrenean endemics.
Some 220 vertebrate species are recorded, almost two thirds of them birds: capercaillie, golden eagle, bearded vulture, griffon vulture and Pyrenean chamois.
