Granada · Andalucía

Mulhacén, at 3,479 metres, is the highest peak of the Iberian Peninsula and the second highest in Spain after Teide; it has a prominence of 3,285 m. It is part of Sierra Nevada National Park, in Granada, within the Sierra Nevada massif, in the Penibetic range.
Its name comes from Muley Hacén, a Nasrid king who is said to have been buried on this mountain. The first documented ascent was in 1804, by the botanist Simón de Rojas Clemente, and the first winter ascent in 1901.
Since 1994 it can only be reached on foot, on horseback or by bicycle from the south: you climb from Capileira, Trevélez, Güéjar Sierra or Pradollano, and in summer there is a park minibus. It is high mountain terrain and can be dangerous in winter: on 5 March 2006 three British hikers died, presumably from hypothermia. From its summit, on a clear day, you can see the coast and the surrounding peaks.
