Cap de Creus

Girona · Cataluña

Cap de Creus is the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, north of the Gulf of Roses, in Girona. It is a rugged, rocky headland over the Mediterranean and a natural park since 1998, managed by the Generalitat de Catalunya, around Cadaqués and Roses.

Its terrain is granite and Ordovician schist, with scrub predominating. There are prehistoric dolmens, the Rhodians founded Roses and in the area is the medieval monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes.

The lighthouse, at the eastern tip, is at 87 metres of altitude. It seems that Dalí was inspired by a rock at Cala Cullaré for The Great Masturbator (1929). Rock shaped by the tramontana wind and hidden coves.
