Zumaia is a town in Gipuzkoa on the shore of the Cantabrian Sea, in the estuary where the rivers Urola and Narrondo meet. On its coast the flysch strata outcrop, layers of rock that form cliffs and platforms at the water's edge; between Deba and Zumaia the outcrops are vertical and accessible, which makes them easy to study.
On Itzurun beach the Global Boundary Stratotype of the Selandian (about 61.6 million years ago) and Thanetian (59.2 million) stages of the Paleocene was set. The hermitage of San Telmo stands on the flysch cliff.
