The Tablas de Daimiel National Park protects the wetland of the same name, in the municipalities of Daimiel and Villarrubia de los Ojos, in Ciudad Real. It was declared a national park on 28 June 1973, is also a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Special Area of Conservation, and covers 3,030 hectares.

The wetland forms at the confluence of the Guadiana, with fresh water, and the Cigüela, with brackish water; it is a river 'tabla' (floodplain), with peat that can burn when it dries out. Reed, saw-sedge, stoneworts and tamarisk grow here, and purple heron, bittern, mallard and other migratory birds live here, as well as introduced fish such as pike.

The wetland suffered drying out from 1956 and overexploitation of aquifer 23, with peat fires in 2009; according to the source, in June 2023 only 103 hectares were flooded, so its appearance changes a great deal from one year to the next.
