Monfragüe National Park, in the province of Cáceres, is crossed by the rivers Tagus and Tiétar. It was declared a natural park on 4 April 1979, a Special Protection Area for Birds in 1988, a Biosphere Reserve in July 2003 and a national park on 2 March 2007. It covers 17,852 hectares, with altitudes between 250 and 750 metres, spread across Serradilla, Jaraicejo, Malpartida de Plasencia, Serrejón, Toril, Casas de Miravete and Torrejón el Rubio.
Holm oaks, cork oaks and Portuguese oaks predominate, with rockrose, heather, strawberry trees, junipers and wild olives. 286 pairs of black vulture (February 2007) and 12 of Spanish imperial eagle were counted.
The castle is a good viewpoint, beside the hermitage of the Virgin. Dehesa and crags above the Tagus, a paradise for vultures and eagles.
