The Fragas do Eume Natural Park, in A Coruña, was created on 30 July 1997 (Decree 218/1997) and protects about 9,126 hectares along the banks of the river Eume, between Cabanas, A Capela, Monfero, Pontedeume and As Pontes de García Rodríguez.

Oak predominates, with chestnuts, birches and about twenty species of ferns. 13 of the 15 amphibian species of Galicia live here, as well as otter, genet, roe deer, red deer and badger; the wolf occupies the higher areas.

The monastery of Caaveiro has been a Site of Cultural Interest since 1975, belongs to the A Coruña Provincial Council and its restoration began in 2003. Between 31 March and 3 April 2012 a fire in A Capela burned 750 hectares, about 350 of them inside the park. One of the best-preserved Atlantic forests in Europe, with ferns, rivers and a monastery among the trees.
